the effects of the ranger buffs
When i used to play ranger using a bow back before this buff (janaury 17th 2008 buff), rangers used to suck in doing just ordinary dmg. Although this was true, they were useful in large group for spiking but not by themselves in damaging. Rangers were always useful as interupts/condition dealers for support, but were not good in damaging.
But now..... sundering attack and penetrating attack have been buffed (power attack has been buffed too, but it sucks compared to the other 2 mentioned above. Precision shot may be useful for a ranger spike now=P)
Now im using this concept in RA
[card]Prepared shot[/card][card]Sundering Attack[/card][card]Penetrating attack[/card] and [card]Distracting Shot[/card] or [card]Savage Shot[/card] +
[card]Read The Wind[/card] or any other preparation.
it works good in spiking and does alot of dmg (sundering attack does anywehre from 50-110 per hit, and the attack will hit ur target in 1-2seconds comapred to a normal shot which takes 2seconds-4seconds (assuming there will be no IAS).
With IAS [card]Lightning Reflexes[/card] (Such as this), the IAS is applied to the 1 second attack, which leaves u able to fire more shots in a smaller time frame.
So with this in mind, if i use read the wind followed by prepared shot then sundering attack then penetrating attack, i will do roughly 200-300dmg in about 2-5seconds.
Rangers totally pwn now

Marksman's Wager is ftw for spamming the buffed skills. Just bring called shot to get your energy back if you ever miss.
Unless, you know, you actually want to do something useful.

I for one am very pleased with those skill buffs.
I also use a lot prepared shot along with many preperations.
the reason why I am hooked on prep shot is that it allows me to spam more the PvE skills, and coupled with penetrating/sundering "quick" shot effect, it hepls to spike.

Yah..
I was just in RA with my lifestealing necro, and some ranger was running pretty much that and hit me for like 300 damage in all in about 3 seconds...

If you're running Prep Shot then take [skill=text]Concussion Shot[/skill] instead of Savage. That way, if you nail a Monk with it, you can spike him down and screw him over while he can't cast anything.

Agreed. You've got an elite which doubles as an energy management skill. You can probable make better use of it by powering out concussion shots over savages.

Nerf of magebane show was well balanced from these lovely buff. Now ranger can do a good dps. I hope this changes will be permanent ^^
why not use Prepared shot with expert focus to have a near infinity pool of energy?
Expert Focus
Prepared Shot
Penetrating Shot
sundering shot
Power shot
Whirling Defense
Mending Touch
Rez
Pure Damage Dealer no Interrupt

Ive just been playing around with:
[card]Punishing Shot[/card][card]Precision Shot[/card][card]Penetrating Attack[/card][card]Natural Stride[/card][card]Mending Touch[/card][card]Troll Unguent[/card][card]Resurrection Signet[/card]
it worked ok, and the damage was pretty fun. But it needs a bit more work.

Because Read the Wind allows you to use a Flatbow?
Also no interrupts = epic failure.

Yes I know the meaning of fun with 5 question marks, but that doesn't mean im going to run and fill my bar full of prot/heal skills in a sad attempt to mock another role in the team.
Rangers are good at interrupting. Best to stick to it.

Ok ok, I maybe took the wrong end of the stck and im a little cranky.
Because I was bored i decided to put your lil build to the test to see how it went. I used the Master of Damage and used a Recurve Bow of Fortitude (15^50, no bow string).
Using only Burning Arrow, AP and Sloth hunter's Shot I managed to get a higher DPS (albeit only 1 higher). And this includes 2 interrupts on my bar which i didn't use lol

I didn't notice a huge increase in damage compared to the conjure/glass arrows/point blank/zojun's combination since it was a bit more consistent in terms of damage due to the +damage. That particular combination is not so great with spikes. It does bring up the point that the only thing that comes in mind with the ranger buffs this past update was perhaps that Izzy wanted rspike to come back into play for pick up groups. Didn't Andrew say Izzy was playing HA before the update?

So what's fun about making a bar that takes away a shot that gives damage AND an interrupt( [skill]savage shot[/skill] ), and the fall-back skill of every ranger ( [skill]distracting shot[/skill] ), for damage that can be created on a bar using three skills? Shorting yourself for a point of damage is not fun to me. The fun in creating new builds, to most, is finding new synergies in creating a result you want. making something harder to do isn't too much fun.
You should use that [skill]critical eye[/skill] on your own build. Play smarter, not harder.
